Weighted blankets in nursing homes: A solution for mastering everyday life

Unfortunately, sleep problems and mental health issues are common in nursing homes and pose a challenge for residents and caregivers. A study from Halmstad University in Sweden investigated whether weighted blankets could provide a non-pharmacological solution to improve sleep and well-being in older people.

Procedure: The study was based on interviews with nursing staff from various nursing homes. These nursing staff were asked about their experiences with the use of weighted blankets with elderly residents. The interviews focused on the effects of the weighted blankets on the residents' daily lives and their health.

Participants: The participants of the study were 20 nursing staff from different nursing homes. Their experiences and observations in dealing with elderly residents who used weighted blankets were included in the study.

Results: Caregivers unanimously reported positive changes in residents' daily routines after the introduction of weighted blankets. One of the most important observations was an improvement in residents' sleep patterns. They fell asleep faster, had uninterrupted sleep, and felt more rested in the morning. These improvements in sleep behavior may help reduce the need for sleeping medication.

In addition, residents showed increased activity and energy. They were more interested in their surroundings, demonstrated more independence and self-reliance, and felt better overall. The psychological effects of the weighted blankets were also significant. Residents reported a reduction in anxiety and worry, improved mood, and increased emotional well-being. Depressive symptoms were reduced, which could potentially contribute to a reduction in medication treatment.

Conclusion: The study highlights the positive effects of weighted blankets on elderly people in nursing homes. The deep pressure stimulation provided by weighted blankets can reduce stress and sleep problems and improve overall health. A sensitive approach on the part of caregivers is important to promote residents' acceptance of weighted blankets and improve their quality of life.
